Bridgeport Resident ID'd Who Died While In Police Custody

A 31-year-old man who died while in police custody over the weekend has been identified.

Justin Griffin, of Bridgeport, died early Sunday, Jan. 5, following his arrest on Saturday, Jan. 4, by Milford Police, said Connecticut State Police.

According to Milford Police, Griffin was taken into custody, without incident, during the course of a traffic stop when it was discovered that he was the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant. 

During the processing procedure, officers noticed that Griffin was displaying signs of medical distress and paramedics were immediately summoned to evaluate his condition, Milford Police said.

Griffin was transported to the Milford Hospital emergency room where he remained under observation by emergency room staff for several hours. 

 At approximately 11 p.m. Saturday, after examination and observation by Emergency Room Staff, he was released and taken back to the Police Department holding facility.

After being returned to his cell, he was closely monitored by officers, Milford Police said.

During a prisoner check at approximately 5:13 a.m. on Sunday, officers discovered that Griffin was not breathing, state police said.

Officers began CPR and Griffin was subsequently transported to Milford Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after 6 a.m.

At the request of the Milford State’s Attorney’s Office the Connecticut State Police – Central District Major Crime Squad detectives were requested to assume the untimely death investigation.
